A house above the fishing village of Burgau

la vida en azul

As you step through the old wooden doors, the pace changes. The casa is an intimate house on three acres at the quiet end of Burgau, designed and built by Ralph and Sally themselves. Hand painted tiles, collected ceramics, the worn blue light off the water. It asks little of you: to be calm, to be curious, to slow down.

The rooms

Four rooms today, each with its own character and its own super king four poster. In Bamboo, the furniture was made by Ralph himself. Nine rooms when the new wing is done, and no more than nine. Few enough that the whole casa feels like your own.

Life at Salsalito

Three acres kept lightly: a solar heated pool encased in a rock waterfall, two Moroccan gazebos in the garden, hammocks slung in the shade behind the waterfall, and the honesty bar still keeping the evenings.

Dining and the bar

From the boats, the garden, the wood fire.

Restaurante Maré is taking shape at the heart of the casa. The menu will be short. It will turn with the catch and the season. The honesty bar keeps its shelf until the new bar opens, and The Blue Hour begins at dusk.

Burgau

A fishing village named after a shell, its cottages tumbling down narrow cobbled streets to a sheltered horseshoe bay. The cove is ten minutes down the hill on foot, and you can watch the fishermen mend their nets before the evening catch.

Letters from the coast

A few notes a year from the casa: the season, the table, a room come free. Nothing more.
